AVIV TALYA DEKEL

FOLK ARTIST

'OUTSIDER ART'

Aviv is 25 years old and has been creating her wonderful images for 15+ years.....she is a very gentle spirit who has limitless empathy and spreads happiness and joy on her journey through life!   She can also be painfully shy in new situations, but is incredibly motivated and focused on her art.  The theme of hearts and heart flowers repeats itself in her folk art style.  Her art is 'outside the mainstream', and falls into the realm of OUTSIDER ART, which is not within the boundaries of official art culture, similar to the art of Maud Lewis.  Aviv works about 2 hours daily on her needlepoint and painting.  She will not go to bed without reaching her goal for the day, and has been known to hide in the bathroom working with a flashlight well past midnight!  Aviv Sincerely wants to have a positive effect, these are her words:

I Love to make my own designs with bright colours.

I want to make pictures that will help people to feel HAPPY!

I would like lots of people to see them and be HAPPY!

I want to use my Art to help the world to be kind and to save our HOME the EARTH!

We can stop bullying and fighting and work together to have PEACE....

I can show you what that looks like!   Love, Aviv

Aviv's life has changed due to her being at high risk for Covid.  She used to do Hip Hop Dance with Karen Clark (a local dance academy) , Theatre skills with the Deviants (a local drama group), therapeutic horseback riding, swimming, and speech on a weekly basis.  She used to volunteer at St Vincent De Paul Thrift shop and Sassy's Restaurant bi-weekly, as well as working a paid part time job at Adrianna's Whole Enchilada Restaurant. Her world has shrunk to Zoom with her Theatre Group as well as Yoga, tutoring and singing lessons..  Aviv lives with her mom and dad on Twin Willow farm in Brentwood Bay, outside Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island in Canada.  She loves animals and nature. .

Aviv had heart surgery at 3 months for an atrio-ventricular septal defect that was repaired. Then at 12 years she developed type 1 & 2 diabetes, she now has a fully auto insulin pump.  She had always favored her right side and at about 13 years her right hand/arm stopped growing (now it is 1 inch smaller than the left) and her right arm began to lose strength and the bones started to deform along with her right foot. She had always been very involved in all forms of dance but has had to stop now due to loss of stability, range of motion and strength.  Aviv had to stop riding dressage and doing Special Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics.  She had surgery to fuse her right wrist on Feb. 25, 2020.  Hopefully the bones in her wrist will stop disintegrating.  This is not Cerebral Palsy now, we don't know what is causing it.  The operation was very successful in stabllizing her wrist but it no longer bends.  She compensates well and continues to use her right hand to sew and paint.  At this point her right ankle is starting to cause problems....

Aviv began selling her artwork at the local farm market with our farm produce and then continued on to craft fairs and Xmas markets.  This is the first venture into the online market.  Aviv uses her original designs in different colours and no two creations are the same.  She does one of a kind larger pieces and custom orders too.  She has had  3 solo shows at the Spiral Café (418Craigflower, Vic West) for the month of July 2019 and October 2020 and October 2021.  She had a Solo Show ;Small Hand Waving' at arc.hive Gallery in May 2021.  Aviv's artwork was selected by the City of Victoria for the Commute Project giant poster Bus Shelter displays downtown, and was on display 2019/2020.....Aviv is very proud!  She has also shown and sold at Coast Collective Gallery, ArtSea Gallery and the LOOK show. Aviv is a member of the Victoria Arts Council, Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society, ArtSea Gallery in Sidney, Warner Bros purchased 28 of her original Artworks and used some in 2 Netflix series (Maid, Under the Banner of Heaven). She also has a piece with the TINY PRICKS PROJECT.  Aviv was featured on CTV news Sawatsky's Sign Off, and Works of HeART Project website.  Aviv works mainly in fibre/yarn but also uses pastel, acrylics and photography.  Her next Solo Show will be 20222 June at XCHANGES Gallery (behind Greg's Furniture on Government Street by Bay Street).  See SHOWING page for flyer.

Aviv will also be at the GARDENS at HCP in August.
